Our ambition in DR Congo
In view of the high level of need in Ituri, Join For Water and its partner CIDRI want to continue to build drinking water infrastructure, with kiosks as the standard distribution point. The support of the drinking water committees and their umbrella organization is essential for good management. Thanks to a high level of awareness, good hygiene must become a daily habit in schools and in families.
Our activities in DR Congo
Together with CIDRI, Join For Water continues to work on the professional management of the drinking water systems and sanitary facilities. Join For Water brings together all those involved in order to arrive at an integrated vision of the drinking water and sanitation sector. All elements have been mapped out and a sector plan has been drawn up. This programme thus provides an answer to the new Water Act, which gives the drinking water committees recognition and regulates how the various parties in the water sector should take on their role. At the local level, efforts are being made to ensure good management, with the correct collection of contributions, follow-up of repairs, etc. The water boards are also being given the opportunity to make use of the opportunities offered by the new legislation.
A 15th drinking water system is being built in the Bankoko district of Bunia. The influx of refugees is creating additional pressures in this district, including on the drinking water supply. The schools will house Ecosan latrines and hand washing facilities, a waste collection point and a rainwater collection system. Erosion has made the source areas very vulnerable. The planting of trees and other anti-erosion measures protect these areas and thus the water resources in the region. .
A second programme, in line with the previous one, will contribute to the realisation and management in Bankoko. An important aspect is the attention paid to good relations between different ethnic groups. Clear and correct management of natural resources is therefore very important.
